Bold Imaging of Inhibition and Facilitation Induced by Paired-pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Feasibility and Reproducibility
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Paired-Pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) can be used to study cortical excitability. Short interstimulus intervals (ISIs; 1-4 ms) inhibit while longer ISIs (615 ms) facilitate motor evoked potentials (MEPs) induced by the TMS test pulse to the primary motor cortex [1]. Recently, the feasibility of interleaving TMS with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was demonstrated [2, 3]. The combination of paired pulse TMS with fMRI provides a unique possibility to directly visualize TMS induced changes in excitability at a high spatial and temporal resolution.

متن کاملPaired transcranial magnetic stimulation protocols reveal a pattern of inhibition and facilitation in the human parietal cortex.
Intracortical inhibition (ICI) and facilitation (ICF) of the human motor cortex can be induced by paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Although demonstrated in experimental animals, the existence of intracortical inhibitory and excitatory circuits in parietal sensory cortex has not been documented in humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of paired TMS of the pa...
متن کاملModulation of sensorimotor cortex by repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation
This study examines with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) whether 20 min of repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) has a facilitating effect on associated motor controlling regions. Trains of rPMS with a stimulus intensity of 150% of the motor threshold (MT) were applied over right hand flexor muscles of healthy volunteers....

27 Using the paired-pulse paradigm, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has 28 revealed much about the human primary motor cortex (M1). A preceding 29 subthreshold conditioning stimulus (CS) inhibits the excitability of the motor cortex, 30 which is named short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI). In contrast, facilitation is 31 observed when the first pulse (S1) is followed by a secon...
متن کاملNoradrenergic modulation of human visual cortex excitability assessed by paired-pulse visual-evoked potentials.
Paired-pulse paradigms are common tools to explore excitability in the human cortex. Although the underlying mechanisms of intracortical inhibition and facilitation in the motor system assessed by paired transcranial magnetic stimulation are well understood, little is known about the physiology of excitability in the human cortex measured by paired-pulse visual-evoked potentials (VEPs). We ther...
